Setting Up the Mushroom Fruiting & Incubation 3-Tier Walden White LED Grow Tent Kit
Choose a location away from direct sunlight and drafts, such as a basement or a spare room.
Fresh air exchange is especially important during mushroom fruiting. As mushrooms develop, they release carbon dioxide, and insufficient ventilation can contribute to elongated stems, reduced cap development, and other species-dependent growth problems.
Install an appropriately sized exhaust fan using one of the Walden tent's ventilation ports. An exhaust system can help remove CO₂-rich air while drawing replacement air through the tent's intake openings.
For growers seeking more automated environmental management, the Active Grow EDGE Series Smart Ventilation & Climate Control Kit provides adjustable exhaust ventilation, air circulation, and environmental monitoring through a compatible controller.
The EDGE system can help regulate ventilation based on environmental conditions, but it does not directly measure or control CO₂ unless a separate compatible CO₂-control solution is provided.
When configuring exhaust, consider where the air will be discharged, particularly if growing species that release substantial airborne spores.
Negative pressure systems help exhaust spores and CO2 outside of the tent and pull oxygen-rich air from the bottom of the tent.
Attach the Spore Stopper Filter to the back of your fresh air exchange fan to capture any excess spores. Use a 6-inch hose clamp to secure the filter.
Install the included Active Grow LED mushroom grow lights according to the kit instructions, ensuring suitable coverage across the growing tiers.
Unlike plants, mushrooms do not use light for photosynthesis. However, light can influence fruiting body formation, pigmentation, and development in many cultivated mushroom species.
Active Grow's Blue Sun Spectrum combines blue wavelengths with broad-spectrum white light. Research suggests that blue light can influence mushroom development in certain species, although the ideal lighting conditions depend on the mushroom being cultivated.

Ensure the tent functions correctly, blocks out light effectively, and has proper ventilation. Make sure all air ports are cinched off with the double cinching ports to maintain a controlled environment inside the tent.
Maintaining a clean fruiting environment helps reduce contamination risks between growing cycles.
Wipe down the tent's interior surfaces, shelves, and removable spill tray regularly using cleaning products appropriate for the materials. Remove standing water, spent substrate, and visibly contaminated growing blocks promptly.
Keep in mind that a mushroom fruiting tent is not a sterile environment. Sterile or appropriately sanitized procedures are particularly important during spawn production and substrate inoculation, while fruiting generally focuses on cleanliness, appropriate airflow, and moisture management.
The Walden tent's smooth PEVA interior helps make routine cleaning and inspection more convenient.
Maintaining the right environment is one of the most important parts of mushroom fruiting. Even with a well-designed tent, humidity and fresh air exchange need to work together.
Fresh air exchange helps prevent excessive carbon dioxide buildup, but it can also remove moisture from the growing environment. Meanwhile, too little ventilation can create stagnant conditions, even when humidity is high.
Active Grow's EDGE Series offers optional equipment to help growers manage these conditions more consistently.
EDGE Smart Ventilation & Climate Control
The EDGE Smart Ventilation & Climate Control Kit combines adjustable exhaust ventilation, air circulation, environmental sensing, and compatible smart controls.
Growers can use it to monitor temperature and humidity and configure ventilation to respond to changing conditions.
For mushroom cultivation, the goal is to provide adequate fresh air exchange without creating strong, drying airflow directly across developing mushrooms.
Many cultivated mushrooms benefit from elevated relative humidity during fruiting. The appropriate humidity range depends on the species, development stage, and growing conditions.
The EDGE Automatic Grow Tent Humidification Kit includes a 4L ultrasonic humidifier and a dedicated humidity controller.
Growers can select humidity thresholds, allowing the humidifier to activate when humidity falls below the chosen setting and stop when the upper threshold is reached.
This helps reduce manual adjustments and maintain more consistent moisture levels.
The humidification kit uses its own dedicated humidity controller, separate from the main EDGE ventilation controller.
The Walden White Grow Tent, EDGE ventilation system, and EDGE humidification system can be combined to create a more automated indoor mushroom fruiting environment.
- Walden White Grow Tent: Provides the growing enclosure, removable shelves, observation windows, and mushroom LED lighting when purchased as a lighting kit.
- EDGE Ventilation & Climate Control: Helps manage fresh air exchange, circulation, and environmental monitoring.
- EDGE Humidification: Adds automatic moisture control using adjustable humidity thresholds.
These systems help growers manage important environmental variables, but they do not eliminate the need to monitor mushroom development, maintain cleanliness, or provide suitable room temperatures.
The appropriate settings should always be adapted to the mushroom species and cultivation method.
Importance of Balancing Ventilation & Humidity in a Mushroom Grow Tent
Fresh Air Exchange: Just like humans, mushrooms inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Since the 3-Tier Walden Grow Tent is a sealed environment, without proper fresh air exchange, carbon dioxide may build up inside your tent and suffocate your mushrooms. Installing a fresh air exchange fan allows you to exhaust excess CO2 and maintain proper levels of oxygen.

During fruiting, insufficient fresh air exchange can allow carbon dioxide concentrations to rise, potentially affecting mushroom shape and development. Oyster mushrooms, for example, may develop unusually long stems and smaller caps under elevated CO₂ conditions. Ventilation requirements vary by species and by the amount of actively fruiting substrate inside the tent.
Use an appropriately sized exhaust system and adjust airflow based on your growing conditions. Avoid directing strong airflow at developing mushrooms, as this can dry their surfaces. CO2 and lack of oxygen. Without constantly refreshing the air in the tent, the exhaled CO2 will build up and disrupt the mushroom growing process. This is why we installed our fresh air exchange fan. You can also use a carbon dioxide meter to get precise measurements of CO2 concentrations, though this isn’t necessary as long as you keep an eye on your mushroom growth, acknowledge symptoms of high CO2 (lack of growth, leggy stems or coral-like growth) and adjust accordingly.
Humidity: Many cultivated mushrooms require elevated relative humidity during fruiting, commonly around 80–95% depending on the species and growth stage. However, the correct target varies, and maintaining the highest possible humidity is not always beneficial. Low humidity can cause developing mushrooms to dry out, while excessive moisture, persistent condensation, and poor air exchange can encourage undesirable surface conditions. A humidity controller and humidifier can help maintain a consistent target range, while proper ventilation helps exchange stale air. Position the humidity sensor away from direct mist and monitor the actual condition of the mushroom surfaces.

Mushrooms are about 92% water, and for this reason, mycelium in the wild will wait until rainfall or humid conditions to produce mushrooms. So, along with a fresh air exchange fan, mushroom growers will add humidification systems in their tent in order to prevent mushrooms from drying out or not growing at all.
Temperature: Temperature requirements vary considerably between mushroom species and strains. Some varieties fruit best in cool conditions, while others tolerate or prefer warmer environments.

Choose a room where the ambient temperature is reasonably close to the requirements of the mushrooms you're cultivating. The grow tent can help organize and manage the fruiting environment, but it does not independently provide heating or refrigeration. EDGE ventilation can respond to temperature conditions through airflow, but it cannot cool the tent below the temperature of the incoming air without an external cooling system.
Mushrooms do not photosynthesize like plants, but light can act as an important developmental signal during fruiting.
Research suggests that blue wavelengths, particularly within the 400–500 nm range, can influence fruiting body formation, cap development, and pigmentation in certain cultivated mushroom species.
However, blue light is not universally superior for every mushroom. The best lighting conditions depend on the species, strain, and cultivation stage.
The Active Grow Blue Sun Spectrum combines 450 nm blue light with broad-spectrum 6500K white light, offering a lighting option for indoor mushroom cultivation.

Mushroom Grow Tent FAQs
The ideal temperature depends on the mushroom species, strain, and growth stage. Many commonly cultivated mushrooms fruit within approximately 55–75°F (13–24°C), although some varieties require cooler or warmer conditions. Always follow the recommended temperature range for your specific mushroom species. A grow tent helps organize the growing environment, while ventilation and external heating or cooling may be needed to maintain suitable temperatures.
Many cultivated mushroom species benefit from light during fruiting, even though mushrooms do not photosynthesize like plants. Light can influence fruiting body formation, cap development, and pigmentation. Blue wavelengths may be particularly beneficial for certain species, but lighting requirements vary.
